What is Lichen?

Interestingly enough, lichens are formed through a symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae. Working together, the fungus provides a protective structure for the algae to live in, and in return the algae makes energy for the fungus to use. Together this dynamite team breaks down rock and wood which builds soil and makes nutrients available for more complex plants. Lichens also control erosion by absorbing water and stabilizing the soil with surface cover.
